Specialized or Multifaceted?
These tiles were designed by multifaceted artist Olle Nyman in 1955 and are part of the interior at Operakällarens Bakficka (The Hip Pocket), an excellent, intimate counter restaurant right by the Royal Opera. I'd popped in for a bite to eat after life drawing and snapped these photos while I was waiting for my meal.
A versatile artist, Olle Nyman was involved in the interior design of banks, hospitals, theatres and restaurants for which he created tapestries, sculptures, tiles and wall paintings. He also taught and travelled quite a bit. Aside from his painting and sculptures, that is! Olle Nyman's home and studio in Duvnäs Gård has been converted to a museum, and I can recommend a visit.
I thought about how some people, both in art and in other areas, like to specialise in one style, one area of expertise, and excel and shine in that area. Others enjoy exploring different areas or styles or techniques, and the knowledge and passion they have for different areas overlap, cross-pollinate. A Renaissance person? Perhaps it's a question of personality? I think I'm the type who is drawn to exploring many different areas. Which type are you?
